When the cure was invented everyone thought it was a permanent solution for all that wanted it, but it wasn’t. The effects of this drug only lasted for about three months and as all vials of it were destroyed there is no way to replenish the dose. Everyone that had taken it found themselves with their abilities back, just the same as ever. Now this is bad enough for those that thought they could lead a normal life, but that wasn’t the end of it, no that was merely the beginning.
The first case of side effects amounted themselves in a young mutant called Jessica Vale. She took the cure voluntarily because she wished to no longer see what lay before her; she wanted to be human. Little did she know that the cure would in fact become a virus that would make her life worse than ever. All of a sudden she had no control over her ability. Whereas she used to be able to block out the visions so she did not always see them now they floated before her eyes every minute of the day, or they just disappeared completely and she was left blind to everything that was going to happen to her. The cure it appears changed the mutant chromosome into something far worse than it had been, for it made it uncontrollable. Those with more dangerous abilities found themselves a danger to others. Rogue couldn’t even be near people for three weeks afterwards because just breathing the same air as them would absorb their powers.
With training a mediocre amount of resistance against ability was gained, but without the help of Professor Xavier, and Magneto more powerful than ever, there seemed little hope for the mutant world. Until he walked back into their lives within a new body. Xavier quickly picked up where he had left off and trained those affected by the virus to control their abilities as best they could until more research could be done to put them back to the way they were. Rogue was released from her isolation and the school appears to be carrying on as normal. However behind the smiles the strain is beginning to show. Students that were cured, either by choice or at that final battle of Alcatraz by accident, are still found shooting off their powers left and right with no way of stopping it. Many have had to have stints in isolation to try and bring them back to ground, but few have succeeded so far. It will take time says the Professor but with the injury, and even death rates, rising by the second time is something they do not have.
And what of the Brotherhood? Well when Magneto regained his powers he rejoined his commune and set to work on gaining revenge over the X-Men that had tricked him, the humans that had tried to cage him, and the members of his own team that had run in fear. He became ruthless in his tirade, and as his dose of the cure had been even stronger than most gaining control was even harder, but with that came an advantage. Magneto found he was even more powerful; he could do even more with his singular mind. Yet he still knew that his Brotherhood was missing something, something that would insure him victory in the coming battle. The Brotherhood needed a class 5.
Unfortunately for The Brotherhood it was not them that discovered an all powerful, it was the Institute, and it didn’t just get one. No it got 4. Jean Grey’s Phoenix once more saved her from complete death and in the time away it has been reined under control once more. Jean is now as she was before the firebird was set lose, it is the other three that caused concern. Three young teenagers each with their own amazing abilities. Savannah, a mutant with control of anything that contained atoms, be it water, wind, fire, air… anything. Then there was Alexander, better known to his friends as Bolt, he could manipulate anything with an energy current, and make it bend to his every command. Thirdly there was Jasper, Desire, his abilities could make any person fall under his charm with a mere flick of his eye, which is the reason he has to hide them. Nobody apart from other class 5’s is immune and he’s causing a bit of a stir at the Institute. He can make a person do anything he wants by just saying his command in a certain tone. So what did Xavier do with these three? Learning from his mistake with Jean he didn’t strive to lock their abilities away, he only urged them to learn control, and to not give into the darkness that would surely overcome them at some point. However he didn’t know that Magneto had sensed these three new powerful presences and was already assembling his army. He would take them for his fight, by reason or by force. They will fight by his side, one way or another.
So with the Brotherhood closing in, tracking a new future and Xavier battling to keep his cured students from killing each other the whole mutant world is at war with itself. The humans on the other side see none of this; all they get the witness is Hank telling them that all is fine for fear of causing another Alcatraz incident. All the Government wants is peace but with so many new threats that seems an impossibility at the present time. Everyone must fight for those they love, those they believe in, and what they want. But where will you stand now that the mutants have become
